Making the Glass
To start off glass makers will hear up their desired glass.
Some can get as hot as 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
The amount of glass, type of glass, and how hot the glass is all determined
beforehand based on the desired sculpture.
Molding the Glass
Once the glass makers have the molten glass they will start forming and shaping it.
This process can be long of short depending on the sculpture. One of the first things
glass makers will do is grab the molten glass on a tube an then they will blow in the
other end of the tube. This creates an air pocket in the glass allowing them to mold and sculpt it.
They well use other tools to pull or push the glass into different shapes and to make
handles or other parts. Throughout this whole process you must make sure you keep the
part of the glass you are molding hot. This can be done by putting back into the fire,
furnace, or crucible. On the other hand, you can just use a torch to heat up one specific area.
In both cases make sure you don’t heat the glass to high or it will melt apart.
Cooling The Glass
Once glass sculpture is made you then need to cool it. You never want to cool it quickly as it could
lead to cracks. The best way is to put it into a kiln and decrease the heat every hour this will cool
the glass off slowly. But depending on the glass I make cool quickly and you will need to just let it
set for a few hours.
