Bombina orientalis are semiaquatic frogs found natively in China, Korea, and eastern parts of Russia. They are found naturally in a variety of both terrestrial and aquatic habitats including forests, river valleys, meadows, wetlands, lakes, ponds, streams, and ephemoral freshwater sources such as puddles and ditches. They are typically in the 1.5 to 3 inch range, females being larger. Though not as potent as Poison dart frogs, their diet also makes them poisonous. Research has also demonstrated that Bombina orientalis are quite intelligent and capable of navigating mazes, especially when compared to other frogs.
Bombina orientalis' diet in the wild consists of insects, worms, and mollusca. B. orientalis is able to absorb toxins from the its food and secrete them through the skin when it feels threatened or frightened. Similar to Poison dart frogs, though not as potent.
